Sandhill Crane Visitors' Center and Observation Structure
Sandhill Crane Observation Structure
Moss Lake and vicinity, Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge; Seymour, IN
Project:
Sandhill Cranes are among the largest wading the birds in the United States. They migrate in great numbers along several flyways including one through central Indiana.
In recent years Mucatatuck National Wildlife Refuge has become a stopping point for about 80,000 birds as they go north in February and south in November. About 45,000 stay at the refuge for the entire winter, spending their nights in Moss Lake, a
large shallow lake, and their days foraging in cornfields in the area where they can often be seen in flocks of hundreds.
The crane migration is a spectacle of nature which draws many visitors to the Sand Hills of Nebraska and Indiana’s Jasper Pulaski State Park.
This project will design facilities to allow people to experience the crane migration.
