KEY WEST COTTAGE

This renovation project is overseen by the Key West Historic Commission.  The house is located in Old Town and in the historic writers’ compound.  The house was formerly owned by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, John Hersey and his wife Barbara who was said to be the model for Morticia of the Addams Family.

The Hersey House is small, a total of 935 square feet, and has two bedrooms and one bathroom which measures an odd, 6’-0” x 17’-0.

The object of the renovation project is to design the house that could be used by three couples, have a second bathroom, and to redesign the kitchen to accommodate an oversized but original Saarinen tulip table, diameter 0f 52”, and the eight chairs which accompany it.  The table was rumored to host rowdy games of Pinochle though another story suggests games of Scrabble.
